Opening Celebration for the Education Center
The Education Center is completed! With a grand celebration on January 22, we officially cut the ribbon and opened the doors to the community. The afternoon began with a ‘fanfare” of 100 marching students following the local marching band. Many of the town people, officials, and school directors followed the students to the opening celebration. The National Anthem played as the speaking program began. School directors, parents of students, 2 members of our alumni, community leaders, board and staff members offered words of hope and gratitude. A lively reception followed with over 350 people in attendance. We were overcome with emotion as this long-awaited day was celebrated and enjoyed by all.
For all of our supporters, we wish you could have been there, because without your support the Education Center would have remained a dream and not a reality. Thanks to you, our 9 staff members have a good working environment and tutoring classes in math, science and language have begun. 60 illiterate adults have signed up for the literacy program that will begin in March. In April, a group of 14 youth from this region will travel to Haiti and offer programs in art and crafts, English, and play our annual soccer game. In June, a group of teachers from the Morley School in West Hartford will visit Haiti and help us plan programs for teachers and students. We are truly excited about the endless education opportunities we can offer now that we have this Center. On behalf of our Board of Trustees, Haitian Board of Advisors, staff members, students and parents, we offer our gratitude for your support of our scholarship program and this building fund.
